Some journals sound like they should be bands.
Whereas some journal titles ARE in fact the same as band names.
I wondered… how many journal titles are also band names.
Let’s find out!
The journals cited in PubMed could be downloaded as a text file from here.
This list includes every MEDLINE journal – even defunct ones – as well as non-MEDLINE journals where content is is in PMC. This will do for now, but is obviously limited. We can get a list of only the journal titles using the command line.

Now we need a list of bands. Discogs has an API, but fortunately they make monthly dumps of their data available for download here. The info for Artists is available as xml.gz. I unzipped the file and copied it to the correct place.
Now we switch to R. I use a standardised folder structure in the wd – all that matters is that in Data/ I have all_titles.txt and discogs_20211001_artists.xml
With a few lines of code we can get both the band names and the journal titles into R and find exact matches.

We had 8 million artist names from discogs and 34K journal titles from PubMed. We found 525 journals that match band names. The full list is below. I verified that a few of the weirder names were genuine.
